Örebro and the mushroom
Örebro has always known its forest. Generations of woodcutters, hunters, and children sent to gather blackberries have walked its edge and come home again without incident. The city pays the treeline no particular mind.
That changes on a Tuesday morning in late autumn, when a mushroom the size of a church door pushes up through the cobblestones outside the castle gate.
It arrives sometime between the third bell and the first stalls of the market — no crack of earth reported, no noise to explain why there is suddenly a column of pale gold rising from the square. Rust-coloured spots mottle its cap in clusters that look almost deliberate, like a brand, or a rash. And it hums. A low, patient note — the kind that lives in the chest rather than the ears, the kind that settles in the way a fever does.
The market sellers give it a wide berth. The pigeons that normally coat every perch in the square will not go near it. By noon a crowd has gathered — respectable citizens at a respectable distance — and you are, for reasons you cannot quite name, standing closer to it than any of them.
You have swept these castle steps every day for three years. You know the square's sounds: the haggling, the bells, cart-wheels on stone. None of it can swallow the hum now. Up close it almost resolves into syllables, into something that breathes with an intention behind it. The cap tilts — only slightly — in your direction.
At its base, half-hidden in the damp and fractured earth, a gap has opened in the stem. Dark inside. Cool. Glowing faintly with the colour of moss lit from underneath — the colour of something alive in the wrong direction.
A single spore drifts past your face. You smell soil, and copper, and something sweeter underneath both.
Behind you, the castle bell begins to ring. A guard's voice cuts through the crowd, ordering everyone back.
You do not move.
