Give me a minute, a knights tale
Humphrey rounds on Reginald with an expression of tremendous administrative confidence. "You," he says. "You are the herald. You are a man of the law. Rule on whether the Goat's silence constitutes formal acceptance."
Reginald opens his mouth. Closes it. Opens it again. He looks at the Goat. He looks at his satchel, as though the answer might be in there alongside his lunch and the sixteen forms he was meant to file three months ago. He actually rummages briefly.
"There is," Reginald says carefully, "a precedent. Midden-on-Sogge, 1243. A cheese was challenged to single combat. The cheese did not respond."
"And?"
"The cheese won." Reginald produces a scroll. "On points. Due to the challenger's failure to bring a second." He holds the scroll out. Humphrey stares at it. The Goat chews in the middle distance, blissfully unconcerned.
