The Crooked Oak
Tobias kneels at the peak's edge and reaches into the glowing quilt below. His fingers close around a thread that pulses gold and warm, like a heartbeat pressed into silk. The moment he grips it the whole quilt shifts — colours rearranging, stories breathing — and the thread tugs back. Not against him, but toward something: northward along the mountain's spine, with the patient insistence of a compass needle. The fairy lands on his shoulder, her weight no heavier than a moth, and tilts her head as if listening to whatever the thread is saying. Far below, one story brightens where all the others dim — a dark tower, a locked door, a single candle burning in a high window. Tobias's heart beats faster. He can let go, or he can follow where the thread leads.
