A Montenegro adventure
"What happened in 1887?" Alex asks, which is technically Mira's question but he gets it out first. Mira closes her guidebook with the crisp sound of a small defeat. Vesna unstoppers the rakija, takes a considered sip, and recaps it with the ceremony of someone about to say something important. "The tower," she begins, "did not fall because of the earthquake." She lets that settle. Outside, a particularly theatrical thunderclap obliges. "The earthquake was 1979. People mix this up — your book mixes this up." She smooths the contract flat on her knee. "The chapel collapsed in 1887 because of a disagreement." She pauses in the way of someone who has told this story before and knows exactly where the pauses belong. "A disagreement between two men about a bell." She looks up. "Do you want to know whose names are on this contract?"
